Starfish Beach at Rach Vem is worth visiting if you go in the dry season, November to April, and arrive in the morning. On those days the water is calm and clear, starfish rest in the shallows, and the fishing village and seafood rafts make a relaxed half day about 40 to 60 minutes from Duong Dong. Entry is free, and a Grab car or a scooter will get you there.
Starfish Beach is not worth a special trip if starfish are your only reason and you visit between May and October, or if you expect a long resort beach or coral snorkelling.
Make the morning count: arrive before the crowd
A private morning tour reaches Rach Vem ahead of the group buses, with a private boat to the sandbar and Ham Rong Cape. Free cancellation up to 3 days before.

Starfish Beach suits visitors who enjoy shallow, calm water, wildlife seen at close range and a working fishing village, and who can go in the morning. It suits less well anyone expecting a classic resort beach, coral, or guaranteed starfish.
| Worth it for | Probably not worth it for |
|---|---|
| Families with young children: shallow, calm water in the dry season | Snorkellers looking for coral and reef fish |
| Visitors who can go early in the morning | Visitors who can only arrive in the early afternoon |
| Travellers curious about village life and seafood | Anyone after loungers, bars and a long sandy beach |
| Dry-season visits, November to April | Starfish-only trips between May and October |
| Photographers happy to shoot wildlife where it lies | Anyone wanting a photo holding a starfish |
The last row matters. Starfish at Rach Vem must stay in the water, and a photo holding one is exactly what harms them. Our guide to seeing the starfish without harming them explains why, and the Starfish Beach photo guide shows how to get a good picture anyway.
What visitors like, and what disappoints them
What makes Starfish Beach work is simple: warm, shallow water that stays calm in the dry season, red starfish resting on the sand, and lunch on a raft house over the water. The village itself, with its stilt houses and fish cages, is worth as much attention as the starfish.
The common disappointments come from timing and expectations. Group tours arrive around midday, so the shallows near the village can be crowded and cloudy by lunchtime. In the rainy season the water turns murky and starfish are hard to find. And starfish numbers vary from week to week, so a visit can look quite different from photos taken on the best days of the dry season.
Money is the other complaint. TripAdvisor reviewers in November and December 2025 described boat fares far above the normal rate and charges for food and boats announced only after arrival. These are individual reports, but they are common enough to plan around: agree every price before you use anything.
What Starfish Beach costs: on your own, by group tour, or private
Starfish Beach itself is free. What you pay for is getting there, a boat if you want one, and lunch. The table compares the three usual ways to visit, with third-party prices as of September 2026.
| On your own | Group tour | Our private tour | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transport | Grab roughly 250,000-400,000 VND each way, or a scooter at about 120,000-150,000 VND a day | Included, shared minibus | Private car and driver |
| Boat to the sandbar | About 150,000-300,000 VND per person, agreed on the spot | Often extra or in the afternoon | Private boat included |
| Lunch | A few hundred thousand dong per person | Often extra | Raft-house lunch included |
| Arrival at Rach Vem | Whenever you choose | Around midday | Early morning |
| Total | Lowest, if you negotiate well | About US$44-80 per person | $200 for two people |
For comparison, other private north-island tours listed online cost roughly US$90 to 150 for two people as of September 2026, and jeep versions more. Every on-site cost at the village is broken down in Rach Vem costs.
How to make Starfish Beach worth it if you go
Timing decides most of the experience at Starfish Beach. Go between November and April, arrive before 9 am if you can, and leave the swim and the boat for the morning, when the water is clearest. Our guide to the best time to see starfish has the details, and Starfish Beach in the rainy season covers May to October honestly.
Use the boat when the sea is calm. The sandbar away from the village and Ham Rong Cape have clearer water and fewer people; whether the fare is worth it is weighed up in our article on the Rach Vem boat trip.
Plan lunch as part of the visit, not an afterthought. Eat on a raft house in late morning, before the tour groups, and agree prices per kilo first; our guide to seafood on the rafts at Rach Vem lists what to order. Spend a few minutes in Rach Vem fishing village itself, and bring water shoes for a swim; swimming and snorkelling at Starfish Beach explains what the water is like. The full overview is in our Rach Vem Beach visitor guide.
